when i was in high school at least half the draw of cinephilia was looking at old film books. soviet-looking graphic design, dreamy stills from movies since canonized or vanished. i've been trying to incorporate some of the look of these books into the design of the heavens. below is the current version of the teleporter room. I made use of the shape on the upper left corner of the above book to create the walls in the image below.

here's a sample of what i've been editing. it's a scene from the second episode when captain andrew and captain ida first meet. i haven't yet started with the effects much. it's going to be practically impossible to get rid of that microphone when johnny makes fun of the stellar coordinator. below: captain andrew's alpha probe.

that fraggle rock episode i saw at steve's place, it made me wonder how much of my childhood entertainment was made by mind-altered beatnik hippies. this short from '65 is an art film made by Henson between commercial projects and muppet stuff. are the children today being told to listen to stalactites ? that's what happened in the fraggle rock show

The Heavens - voice-over recordings

these photos were taken one week ago today. johnny left milwaukee this morning. everything 'heavens' is in the can, so now i have to just spend gobs of time on this computer making a little universe. we recorded the voices in steve's bedroom, with the mic in his sort of closet space. then we shot some fireworks at nancy's house.

These were taken last monday during our last shoot in the green screen studio. I've been editing the footage a lot lately, it looks like we've got 8 episodes that are 5 minutes long. still don't know when episode 1 will be up since I'm still figuring out this after effects program. who was I talking to about when a project is started you have all this freedom and then there's this moment where you enter the phase of the project just coming together and it being just it and not other things

here's some more photos of a shoot several weeks back that joe emailed me today. last night was our last studio shoot, but i haven't yet uploaded those photos. the whole fortress (the name of the building we're in) was so quiet that night. it was like everyone in the building was respectfully giving us silence on our last studio shoot. it was a little spooky. there's usually boomboxes or skateboards or whatever.

it was our last shoot but there's still plenty work to be done in postproduction. but it shouldn't be too long before the first episode is up. below is an example of what i've been working on for the interior of the alpha probe

The Heavens - Our Second Shooting

These were taken during the second shoot for episodes 1-3. I was pretty sick that night, last tuesday. I kept having to blow my nose, throwing my tissues into the corner because there's no trash can at the studio. But there was no skateboarders in the hallway ruining our sound and we're ahead of schedule.
