Cinema One: Signs and Meaning in the Cinema

The book is not telling me what mysterious and scary image is on the cover. I haven't read it yet. But the stills make it look promising and I like how spooky the cover is.

Cinema One: Val Lewton The Reality of Terror

I am really excited that I found this book at Powell's while I was in Portland last weekend. It seemed providential since You Poor Thing has been influenced by Val Lewton often during the writing and development of the project. He was known for horror films, but horror films that are literary, psychological, and not-very-violent. It's kinda hard to find books on Lewton. I didn't know there was a Cinema One about him until I found this.

Another gem from Cinema Books. This is the first Cinema One book, a series from the late-60's and early-70's that I collect. 

Powell's Books

I just got back from visiting some friends in Portland and found a couple of nice things at Powell's books. Such as books on film directors whose last names begin with "F."

Cinema One -- Alain Resnais + Man Ray

I found another "Cinema One" book recently for my collection and I'm really glad they used a lovely still from "Muriel" for the cover. Also glad they used an appropriately pretentious title for a book on Resnais, that the book's empty library pocket is stamped "This is no longer the property of the Everett Public Library", and that when I bought it the cover was on upside down. I also picked up a book of Man Ray photographs and I like them together.

Cinema One: Buster Keaton

I collect these Cinema One books and I recently found this one up by my parents' house in Ashland, Wisconsin. I was paging through it this morning and amazed by the incredible images.

when i was in high school at least half the draw of cinephilia was looking at old film books. soviet-looking graphic design, dreamy stills from movies since canonized or vanished. i've been trying to incorporate some of the look of these books into the design of the heavens. below is the current version of the teleporter room. I made use of the shape on the upper left corner of the above book to create the walls in the image below.
